Born in Christchurch, England and raised in Clinton, Ontario, Paul Bateman graduated from the University of Toronto as a geological engineer and took post graduate work at the University of Saskatchewan. He worked as a project exploration geologist around North America for nine years.
He joined the faculty of Haileybury School of Mines in 1978 and worked there until he retired at the end of 2003. He was also involved in many international teaching projects in China, Morocco, Zimbabwe and Pakistan. He has travelled extensively in Peru, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil.
