Happy Naw-Ruz | Happy New Year | Blessed Easter
It is unusual that Easter this year is so soon after our New Year on March 21st. We were hoping for better, or even more consistent, weather. We're still working on the expanded store, and the books have continued to come in. I tell everyone the same thing: we have no budget to buy books. If they're in good shape and we think we can find them a new home, we'll get them out. If they're not in good shape, or I don't think we can find them a new home, they get ripped up and recycled. If you are fine with those conditions, then bring them them in. We'll do our best to find them a new home.
Coming in April is Brian Dobb's book on the early history of the Haileybury School of Mines, and in May a reprint/ re-making of Don Curry's book on the Fire in Cobalt May 23, 1977.Look for updates on when these are available.
So in spite of the odds, and because of our wonderful neighbours and your support, we are still here. I wish everyone a year full of wonder and gratitude. And again my resolution for this year is to try to do these Newsletters every other month. We'll see if it works this time.
We have submitted Gabby for a couple of awards programs, so we're waiting to hear how it is doing.
What a wild ride. Gabby can't seem to stop talking, and keeps getting into trouble, but wait, he turns everything around in his favour. Set historically, and accurately, in New Liskeard of 1916 through 1918, Gabby is a fictional character interacting with real people and places of that time. He winds his way through New Liskeard and World War I, meeting many famous people of that time with hilarious results. You don't want it to end. Yes it's one of those books. It's been hugely popular so far. You'll love him too. It's available in ebook formats as well.
Sparks of Faith
Speaking of newer titles, we have Sparks of Faith, by Khalil A. Khavari. This book contains personal stories of how people came to the Bahá'í Faith. We quite enjoyed the various, and sometimes quite unlikely, ways this happened. We think you will enjoy it also.
Palliative
Palliative by Henry Kleinhuis. Poems and commentary that ease the passing of loved ones. Perfect gift for those experiencing loss. Non-denominational and easy to read. Not a subject we like to think about, but one that we all face. When we struggle to find the words to say, you may well find them here.
On our Facebook page, there are pictures and descriptions of the books wrapped for our Blind Date With A Book. Basically, we select books and wrap them so you can't see the book or the title. On the outside of the wrapper there is a bit of description, including publishing date, what genre of book it is, and a few words to entice you to read it. You get to unwrap it after you buy it. People have been pleased when they unwrap them, and one lady said it was incredible because it was the same title that she had lost before finishing it before. It's been fun.
The Canadian Writers' Contest Calendar 2024.is still goping strong. Don't feel that if you don't start making your resolutions start in January that it's too late to start now. Every day is the first day in the rest of your life. Don't wait. And with so many things changing from year to year that it becomes gratifying to make sure that everything in the book is as close to accurate as we can make it at press time. We've started working on the 2025 edition, so if you know of any new contests starting up, please let us know.
The Great Fire of 1922, A Centennial Retrospective. We finally finished writing, assembling and indexing it; it came out to 368 pages with about 160 photos and diagrams. Both the hard and soft cover editions are available now. It is as comprehensive as I could make it. This book has been in process for about two and a half years. It’s a big baby, but finally delivered.
As a reminder to those who have said they would post a review on TripAdvisor, doing so would be a huge favour and show of support (and thank-you to those who did). More people came into the store this year saying that is where they discovered our store. The link is here: TripAdvisor reviews for White Mountain Publications, aka White Mountain Books. We appreciate all your support.
