Go Ahead Or Go Home
The Trethewey Story
by Daphne Sleigh
"Go ahead or go home" was the catchy new slogan which Alan Trethewey adopted in the 1960s to sum up his philosophy of business, but it might equally well have been the slogan of several generations of Tretheweys before him. Ambitious and energetic. they were a family of born entrepreneurs.
This book is the story of five generations of the Trethewey family—colourful and action-loving men and women with their fair share of "characters" among them. Eccentric and extreme they may have been, but never for a moment dull.
They originally made their name in the lumber industry, owning large sawmills and numerous logging operations in the Fraser Valley, where the family were early pioneers. The towns of Abbotsford, Mission and Harrison Mills (and, to a lesser extent, Chilliwack and Maple Ridge) owe much of their early growth to Trethewey initative.
But the Tretheweys have never limited themselves to one type of enterprise. They were not only lumbermen, but ranchers, inventors, land speculators and—above all — mine owners. With their Cornish ancestry, mining is in their blood. Almost every Trethewey has had his fling with a mine, and those who have struck it rich have become legend in the family.
Since World War II, Trethewey companies have extended their activities to a remarkable extent, branching out into all types of heavy construction, including high-tension powerline installation, as well as diversifications such as finance and cattle operations. They have carried our projects into every corner of the province, as well as other parts of western Canada and the western United States.
The Trethewey tradition of versatility and enterprise is still an unfinished saga.
