I'd Do Most Of It Again by Ron Bailey. Ron Bailey captures some of the most significant parts of his life in this autobiography. Ron has been a woodsman, mechanic, teacher, farmer, college lecturer and professor who began work at the age of 15 and continued until retiring at the age of 75. $29.95

Immigrant in Porcupine and his Later Journal by Magne Stortroen starts with Magne's journey to Canada from Norway. Born on a farm in Tylldalen, Norway, he came to Canada in 1923 at the age of 20. He worked in lumber camps and road construction around Iroquois Falls, Cochrane, Larder Lake and Timmins from 1923 till 1925, the period described in his story. Between 1925-1950 he worked for Tough-Oakes Mine in Kirkland Lake, and the Hollinger Mine in Timmins. For 19 years he worked for the Dome Mine from 1950 until his retirement in 1969. Altogether he worked 34 years underground, mostly in production jobs. Interesting and humourous first person account of those days in the Porcupine. Also available in ebook formats. $23.95

1146 Kipawa: Portrait of a People This history of Kipawa, a Native community in northern Quebec as told by Kermot Moore, a Métis of Nishnabi (Ojibwa) descent who grew up there. Changes wrought by the fur trade, lumbering and tourism are described in detail. In a hard-hitting style, Mr. Moore shows how traplines and the new tourist zoning systems have displaced the Native, disrupting their traditional livelihood of trapping and forcing them on to the farm or into the factory. Native methods of game conservation are described, as are the land issues that brought the community to stage a blockade on one of the main highways in 1979. 1076 The Legend of Caroline Maben Flower Lady Prospector of the Porcupine by Maggie Wilson. Caroline Maben Flower, a wealthy New York socialite in 1906, most certainly read the news of the fabulous riches in Northern Ontario. When she arrived in Cobalt, Caroline noted how the men made their fortunes at mining. She reckoned, if they could do it, so could she! Never one to let roadblocks stop her, she shouldered a pickaxe and set out to build a mine. Just as she did with her musical career, Caroline promoted herself and built a brand. In Cobalt, and later in the gold fields of the Porcupine, she traded on one notable asset: the fact that she was the only woman in the mining game.

New Liskeard The Pioneer Years by Bruce W. Taylor.
